I believe corporations are required to hold a high degree of integrity while dealing with their customers. I find it very unfortunate that some companies would steal from their clients. It is even worse when the customers exploited are inmates who are serving time behind bars. It is general knowledge that prisoners do not have any money and rely on their relatives to accept the telephone charges. They have no way of fighting back so they simply resign to their fate of exploitation. I was abhorred when I found out what Global Link Tel has been doing while facilitating telecommunication in jails. I am of the opinion that GTL is frustrating the process of rehabilitation since it is defrauding people that are being rehabilitated to believe in the rule of law. I applaud the management of Securus Technologies for bringing this matter to the light.
Intrigued, I followed the press release given by the chief executive officer Richard .A. Smith concerning the fraudulent activities of GTL. I have reason to believe his allegations since in 1998 GTL was found liable by the Louisiana Public Service Commission. The findings of the same Commission are public record, and anyone can unearth the proceedings via Order No. U-20784-B, Docket No. U-20784. Since the investigation in 1998, GTL has not changed and still engages in fraudulent time stamp changing.
He opined that Securus Technologies and its competitors were trying to help in law enforcement and communications among inmates while Global Link was out there tarnishing their name. Stealing from the prisoners is a crime that should be stopped immediately.
